Birding at the Bottom of the Bay, third edition

Birding at the Bottom of the Bay is the primary resource for birdwatching in Santa Clara Valley. Published by the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society, it documents key sites around the county and what can be seen there.

Proceeds from this book benefit SCVAS. It can be purchased online, At the SCVAS Nature Shop at McLellan Ranch in Cupertino.

Breeding Bird Atlas of Santa Clara Valley

Breeding Bird Atlas of Santa Clara Valley The SCVAS Nature Shop is now the proud distributor of the new Breeding Bird Atlas of Santa Clara County by William G. Bousman. This gorgeous book would be a wonderful addition to any book or bird lover's collection. You can purchase a copy either by coming into the SCVAS Nature Shop in Cupertino, or by going to the scvas.org web site and downloading the order form.

San Francisco Bay Salt Ponds

The Southern shores of San Francisco Bay have been used for many years for salt generation. Many of the wetlands have been turned into evaporation ponds used to concentrate and harvest the brine.

A long-term project is underway to rehabilitate many of the Salt Ponds and bring them back to a natural state. There is more information on this project here.

You will hear birders mention some of these salt ponds when they describe locations where birds are found. Some salt ponds are accessible to the public, many are not. If you visit a pond and it's marked as restricted access, please honor that restriction and obey access signage. We've created a Google Map to show the naming and location of the salt maps along the south bay coastline
